Hybrid Creatures

Two bloodlines braided by the Bleed

Concept · Wheel of Ruin

When the Bleed thickens, when the membrane between FateBreak and Wheel of Ruin grows thin enough to weep, it does not only move people and artefacts between layers. It moves blood.

A Hybrid is what happens when two species' lineages cross in the thin places. Not through breeding, through collision. The Bleed reaches into the moment of creation and braids two ancestries into one body. The result is a creature that belongs fully to neither parent species, and carries the strengths of both.

How they appear. In Wheel of Ruin, when the Bleed is active, The Wheel sometimes lands on a slot that does not name a single species. Instead, the spinner is pulled through two (or rarely three) parent-species wheels. Each parent contributes its bloodline; the Hybrid inherits the strongest traits from each.

Tri-Blood. Approximately one in seven Hybrids is a Tri-Blood, three parent species woven into one. These are the rarest of all mortal creatures in the shared age. They carry additional perks, and their art bears the unmistakable mark of three bloodlines in conflict.

Perks of the braided blood:

  • Braided Strength: a random stat bolstered by the merger
  • Twin Resilience: two stats lifted at once
  • Warborn Seam: an extra weapon slot torn open by the fusion
  • Leaking Gift: an ability from neither parent, pulled through the gap
  • Fast Forge: accelerated growth, as though the body is trying to catch up with two lives at once
  • Cross-Inheritance: the stronger inherent gift of each parent, not the weaker

Stat resolution. A Hybrid's stat probabilities are the maximum of its parents, per bucket. A Hybrid is never weaker than the stronger parent in any given stat.

The Bleed does not create Hybrids out of kindness. It creates them because the membrane cannot hold, and what leaks through is too entwined to separate.

"You were not born. You were collided."
