Fate Tokens

The currency of a life not yet written

Artifact · Both verses

Fate Tokens are small, warm disks of pale metal, each one the weight and roughly the size of an old coin. They are not coins. They cannot be spent at any tavern, nor exchanged by any bank. And yet, to the people of FateBreak, they are more valuable than gold.

A Fate Token is a stored spin of The Wheel. When one is held tight and the bearer makes a true choice, not idle wish, but a moment of genuine intent, the Token burns cold for an instant, then crumbles. In that instant, The Wheel nudges. A sword that would have missed, hits. A prophecy that was certain, fractures. A character that was destined to die takes another breath.

They are not cheats. They are the world's admission that fate can be defied, if rarely and at cost.

Where they come from. Scholars disagree. The Wheelwardens teach that Tokens are shed by The Wheel itself, like scales from a turning snake. Other orders say they are minted by the gods, handed to heroes worthy of one more chance. A handful of cynics in Wheel of Ruin call them "Wheel's mercy" and refuse to touch them on principle, they claim a used Token always costs someone something it was not asked to pay.

Rarity. Genuine Fate Tokens are uncommon. Forgeries are common. A real Token, held by a sensitive, will hum faintly against the pulse. Counterfeits buzz. Taverns across both verses display tokens on velvet backing for prestige; most are counterfeit.

"Spend it well. You will not be given another."
